Many of Degas’ paintings were based on direct observations of ballerinas off stage, where the artist would linger to sketch. Degas captured strange postures from unusual angles under artificial light.

He rejected the academic ideal of the mythical or historical subject, and instead sought his figures in modern situations, such as at the ballet. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
